Locational Marginal Prices
Simulation of real-world power grid operations to generate realistic locational marginal prices (LMPs) to reflect the balance between supply and demand at each bus.
- Use Texas 7k Grid with a rich set of generators of various types including renewables.
- Run unit commitment and economic dispatch through advanced optimization.
- Calculate LMPs to reflect the balance of supply and demand.
We design and develop the software Vatic (opens in new tab) to efficiently simulate grid operations, and the software can be customized to any grid.
LMP Geographic Plots
The interactive plot below helps explore how LMPs distribute geographically. Select a day and hour to view the LMP distribution for that hour.
- Each bus is labeled as a dot, with dot size and color warmth proportional to the magnitude of LMP.
- Buses with negative prices are emphasized with the largest size dots.
- Congested transmission lines (over 98% capacity) are shown as red segments when present.
Interactive tips: drag to a region of interest and use the mouse wheel to zoom. Hover on bus dots to see bus name, LMP, and demand. Hover on red line segments to see line ID, congestion ratio, and connected bus IDs. Hover near the top-right of the plot to reveal controls. Click legend items to toggle corresponding layers.
